Massachusetts authorities are actively searching for a person who reportedly jumped from the Sagamore Bridge on Friday morning. According to the Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 9:52 a.m., officers from the Bourne Police Department, state troopers, and personnel from the Bourne Fire Department responded to reports of an individual who may have leaped from the bridge into the Cape Cod Canal below.
Arriving on the scene, officers immediately launched a search operation around the bridge and along the surrounding waterways. Despite these efforts, they were unable to locate the individual, leading to a larger, multi-agency response. In addition to the Massachusetts State Police and Bourne Police Department, the Bourne Department of Natural Resources, Sandwich Fire Department, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Coast Guard have joined the search, bringing in advanced marine resources to aid in locating the missing person.
The search effort highlights the urgency of the situation, as teams continue to scan both the waters and nearby shorelines in hopes of finding the individual. The waters below the Sagamore Bridge are known for their strong currents, which can pose additional challenges to rescue operations.
The Sagamore Bridge, a major route connecting Cape Cod to the mainland, has seen similar incidents in recent years. Local advocates have voiced concerns about bridge safety, particularly regarding mental health and crisis intervention. This incident brings attention to the critical need for mental health support and accessible resources for individuals in crisis, an issue that the Bourne Police Department and Massachusetts State Police are addressing by encouraging those struggling to reach out for help.
